Call for Participation - 7th Edition of Kuma International Summer School

What is Kuma International Summer School?

The school mainly focuses on Bosnia and Herzegovina and the work artists in the region and the diaspora have been making in response to the political turmoil of the 1990s which began with the fall of Yugoslavia and ended with war and genocide.

More than 115 participants from 20 different countries have participated in the program over the past 6 editions (2018-2023).

The program is held annually in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo is a city that has experienced significant conflict and trauma in recent history, and has become a symbol of resilience and hope. The city provides a rich backdrop for the summer school, offering participants the opportunity to engage with local artists and communities, and to learn about the complex cultural and political landscape of the region.

The summer school is open to participants from a variety of disciplines, including art, history, sociology, and political science. The program is designed to be interdisciplinary, with a focus on collaborative and participatory approaches to learning. Participants engage in a variety of activities, including lectures, workshops, field trips, and studio visits, all aimed at exploring the intersection of art and conflict.

The curriculum is structured around a series of thematic modules, each of which explores a different aspect of contemporary art practices in conflict and trauma. Some of the topics covered include: the role of art in conflict resolution, the relationship between art and memory, the ethics of representation in times of crisis, and the potential for art to foster social change.

Who can apply?

We are welcoming participants with a profile in variety of disciplines, including art, history, sociology, and political science who are passionate about exploring the complexities of post-conflict societies through the lens of visual arts and are eager to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.

Participation fee:

The participation fee differs by region and it covers training and all other program-related costs, as well as accomodation and travel costs. Please look up the fees by region:

• REGION 1 - 150.00 EUR - European Union countries and EFTA countries
• REGION 2 - 50.00 EUR - European Union candidate countries
• REGION 3 - 30.00 EUR - European Union potential candidate countries, European Neighbourhood Policy - ENP countries (South and East).

Participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina can have their fee fully covered as a scholarship by making a request in the application form.

Travel Costs:

We reimburse travel costs in accordance with the distance band of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. The distance band of maximum reimbursement per participant is based on this distance calculator (https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/resources-and-tools/distance-calculator):

• Between 10 and 99 km: 23 € rate of maximum reimbursement
• Between 100 and 499 km: 180 € rate of maximum reimbursement
• Between 500 and 1999 km: 275 € rate of maximum reimbursement
• Between 2000 and 2999 km: 360 € rate of maximum reimbursement

The reimbursement of travel costs is possible for all participants from European Union, EFTA countries, European Union candidate countries, European Union potential candidate countries, European Neigbourhood Policy - ENP countries (South and East)

The application deadline for the Kuma International Summer School is June 1st. However, our acceptance process operates on a rolling basis. This means that applications will be reviewed as they are received, and candidates will be accepted until we reach our maximum capacity of 25 participants. Therefore, we encourage interested individuals to submit their applications as soon as possible to increase their chances of being accepted.

Early applicants have a greater opportunity to secure a spot in the program, as we will accept qualified candidates on a first-come, first-served basis until all spots are filled. We aim to notify applicants of their acceptance status within a few weeks of receiving their application.
